Clutter Puppy: Daily Clutter Tips

February 15, 2011

Get double the space in your closet with a second rack to hang hangers from!

You can add another rod in your closet, or buy a closet doubler. We found one on Amazon that gets good reviews.

Deal of the Day!

The Neu Home Closet Doubler is $12.98, and it provides a decent storage solution for smaller items. You could use it for shorts, kid clothes, or other small garments. You definitely can't use it for two rows of dress shirts though - that wouldn't fit in most closets.

How many bikes can you ride at once? Have bicycles you haven't ridden in a year or two? Make a commitment to ride them this year or get rid of them! If they are in bad shape, you can get them fixed at a bike shop for around $50.

Team Clutter-Puppy-on-Bikes would like to share one idea to reduce your bicycle clutter - get them up and off the ground and into the air with a bicycle stand. You can get 2 bike or 4 bike stands from Amazon, REI, or your favorite local bike shop!

Use mugs for loose pens, scissors, markers all over the house. Every place you see pens piling up right now, you can put them into a mug - don't worry, all those empty looking mugs will be full of stray pens in no time.

Here's something for Mr. Clutter's desk - with a tool belt theme! Get a Home-Depot inspired 12-pocket desk organizer (requires a coffee mug) from Bucket Boss for him!

Keep all of your coupons in one place - not just grocery coupons, but restaurants, oil changes - any kind of discount! You can save money and reduce your clutter - two things we're all about.

Don't spend a lot of money organizing your coupons - that would be silly! We found a cute little coupon organizer at Amazon for $3.99 that has 13 compartments for different categories.

One tip to get more space in your office - recycle or throw out those old computer manuals (Windows 98, Microsoft Money 2003, Mac OS 9)

Today's tip is quick - Find five things in your closet that don’t fit you anymore, have holes, or you’d never be caught dead wearing, and donate them!

Organize the pet's canned food with a clever little closet space saver. You can get small racks that hold your pet food cans vertically to dispense one at a time.

Is kitty finicky? Does she demand a different meal every time? Organize ahead of time with the Iris wire rack pet food can dispenser.

The clutter puppy and clutter kitties eat dry food, but they will get canned food as treats!

Keep a small garbage can (tasteful of course) and a shredder (a little harder to conceal) right by the door for your mail.

Sort out mail right there - shred those credit card offers, utility bills you have on autopay, and catalogs you'll never look at.

One of the top-rated inexpensive cross-cut shredders (cross-cut is what you want with a shredder) on Amazon is the Aurora AS420C. There aren't any better looking ones - we suggest you conceal both trash can and shredder underneath an end table. Just don't forget you hid them there!

Combine two New Year's Resolutions into one, and drop off magazines you've already read at the gym!

Most gyms have a place for magazines near the treadmills, elliptical machines, and other equipment for people to read. New reading material is always welcome! You'll be doing others a favor and decluttering your house!

January 21, 2011

Always keep an ongoing donation bag for Goodwill. When you fill up the bag, reward yourself with a special treat.

We like to put clothes that don't fit anymore into the bag, (because we're losing weight, of course), things we've replaced but still work great (how many DVD players do you actually need?), and anything that really just needs a new home.

One rule of thumb is that if it doesn't mean anything to you, and you haven't used it in a year, get rid of it!

Tired of kitty’s litter all over the floor when she leaves the litter box?  Put a small hook inside of a cabinet door and hang a small broom and dust pan to sweep up the litter.

It’s small enough to fit inside most cabinets so why not put one in all of your problem areas?  We found this one from Oxo (one of our favorite brands) on Amazon

Label everything! If you think you'll forget what you have, where you put it, and what's in those weird, creepy boxes your significant other has kept through three different moves, label it!

There are a lot of label makers out there, including good old-fashioned Post-it Notes - but nobody at ClutterPuppy can write legibly, so we went with the Brother P-Touch 1290 ourselves. That was mostly because it was on sale at Office Depot and it had some fancy designs (it also did our wedding invitations, take that pro calligraphers!). Amazon carries the P-Touch 1290, and it's on sale there too!

Make one place for your recipes - especially those go-to favorites when everyone is hungry! Instead of searching through cookbooks, FoodNetwork.com, and newspaper clippings on the fridge, keep everything in one place.

This cute little recipe box from Iota comes with 40 decorated recipe cards and 12 recipe dividers, and can hold 300 recipes! You can also give it as a gift with your own recipes in it if you want to share.

Brooms, mops, rakes, Swiffers all piled up into a corner of the closet? Or worse, each one leans into a different corner of the house? Hang them all from the wall in the garage.

Oxo makes a wall-mounted organizer that expands from 12 inches to 20 inches to hold long-handled rakes, brooms, Swiffers, or other cleaning tools. You can keep everything in one place, up and off the floor.

Get rid of those messy plastic bags that come with your groceries! Use them to clean up after your clutter puppy, to keep muddy shoes in the car, or something else, but find a place for them.

SimpleHuman makes a fantastic wall-mounted plastic bag holder that can go anywhere in your kitchen. We have the deal over at Amazon today on these. Reclaim a drawer, a counter, or a shelf today!

Keep a hanging file folder box right by your front door so you can process mail right away. File important bank statements and tax information, don't just let it pile up!

We found adorable hanging file folder boxes on Amazon that don't look like they came off the set of The Office

Organize the papers in your kitchen junk drawer with a 3-ring binder. Instead of having menus, gift cards, receipts, and everything else all over the place, make tab dividers for each of those in your binder.

Now instead of never being able to find anything paper, you'll have easy access to it. The hard part is doing it the first time!

Thanks to Erin Levy for the idea! We found some great binders on sale at Amazon (in six different colors and styles)

Make room under your bed for storage with bed risers. You can get an extra 16 or 20 cubic feet of space underneath a typical queen-size bed by purchasing inexpensive bed risers.

The space underneath beds is perfect for sweater boxes from the Container Store or Target. With bed risers, you can fit twice as many sweater boxes underneath the bed.

We found a flexible set of bed risers on Amazon that give you the choice of 4 inches or 8 inches of extra height under the bed.

Recycle ten magazines you've already read or aren't going to read.

Many libraries will re-circulate old magazines, if you want to find them a new home.

To avoid this clutter, read your magazines online, or on a Kindle
